Girls

11.03.2016

This week saw International Women's Day on the 9th, a day to celebrate the fairer species. I heard a few men comment on that day that every day is about the girls (and they're right!) but any excuse to be proud of ourselves right? I'm a feminist and love women but I do also love men too, we would feel lost without them. In honour of this day I wanted to collect together a small selection of the women that are inspirational to me.

Emma Watson hasn’t only made her success as a child star while seemingly keeping her head together, but has now become an icon for feminists. She makes herself a relatable young woman and makes her thoughts known and clear without embarrassment. She’s also become a bit of fashion icon over the years with her chic, elegant style.

Model Chantelle Winnie was bullied when she was younger for having a skin discolouration which means she has white patches of skin all over her body, including her face. This beautiful flaw hasn’t stopped her becoming successful within one of the most stereotypically shallow industries. She should be an example to girls everywhere to be proud of your body because beauty comes in many forms.

I no longer have patience for certain things, not because I’ve become arrogant, but simply because I reached a point in my life where I do not want to waste more time with what displeases me or hurts me. I have no patience for cynicism, excessive criticism and demands of any nature. I lost the will to please those who do not like me, to love those who do not love me and to smile at those who do not want to smile at me.

I no longer spend a single minute on those who lie or want to manipulate. I decided not to coexist anymore with pretense, hypocrisy, dishonesty and cheap praise. I do not tolerate selective erudition nor academic arrogance. I do not adjust either to popular gossiping. I hate conflict and comparisons. I believe in a world of opposites and that’s why I avoid people with rigid and inflexible personalities. In friendship I dislike the lack of loyalty and betrayal. I do not get along with those who do not know how to give a compliment or a word of encouragement. Exaggerations bore me and I have difficulty accepting those who do not like animals. And on top of everything I have no patience for anyone who does not deserve my patience. - Meryl Streep

There are mixed feelings about the Australian actress and comedian Rebel Wilson but personally I love her. She’s really funny and she embraces her curves, as she should. I want to watch any film with her in.

In my eyes Angelina Jolie is one of the most beautiful women, unashamed to get her story inked all over her skin. With her outside beauty comes internal beauty also, as she has proven her kind heart through all of charity work. As well as being an amazing actress and business woman she has been a mother to a rainbow family, and has battled depression and breast cancer quite openly and in the public eye but while at the same time keeping her privacy to herself.

My housemates, best friends and sisters. They are there for me always through everything and we love each other unconditionally. I’d be lost without them.

I have always had a soft spot for the Olsen twins and they have been fashion inspirations to me since I was younger so I couldn’t not include them in this list. They were thrown under a spot light when they were tiny and since then have become successful in fashion and film, with not one but two aspirational fashion lines, The Row and Elizabeth and James. Through all of this they have kept their personal lives quite separate from the media and have kept their dignity while constantly in front of the public.

Lastly, I couldn't talk about inspirational women without mentioning this one, and I have left the best until last. My mother. She is my angel and best friend, who supports me through everything. I hope that I grow up to be half the woman that she is.
