Ready steady dim sum

18.02.16

As it’s my boyfriend’s birthday today (happy birthday baby) we celebrated last night by going to a dim sum cooking class. He’s a much more enthusiastic and better cook than me so I have to say I was a little nervous that my little parcels wouldn’t be quite as tasty as I was hoping but I surprised myself! The class was held at VEKU, a branch of London cookery schools on Caledonian Road, and I would highly recommend it for anyone for a cute date night of a different variety or fun outing with the girls.

Our teacher, Will, was a really nice man who helped us each step of the way (thankfully for amateur me!) and there’s a nice, big communal table to learn on with all the other people attending so it’s very social. We made three different types of dumpling – Chiu Chow Fun Gwor, Har Gow and Sui Mai - and in total the class was around three hours, including the making process and the time to relax at the end with a glass of bubbles and our beautifully tasty little creations. Tea is also included, but as we were celebrating I chose the option of bringing your own bottle which is a special added extra.

Dim sum is actually surprisingly quite simple to make you just have to be good with measurements and delicate with your hands. Thankfully the dumpling dough is magic and heals itself because mine did end up with a couple of holes in them during the making process which magically disappeared when they came out of the steamer. For a person who doesn’t enjoy cooking normally I really enjoyed doing this (especially with my love) so even if you’re like me and don’t like making food then go give this a try, it may ignite a passion for it!
